Ceramic or Standard? That Is the Only Question That Matters
Most people arrive asking how dark they can go. The more useful question is what the film is made of, because that is what decides whether the car is actually cooler inside or just darker to look at.
Ceramic film
Ceramic film blocks a large share of infrared heat without needing to be dark. That means a noticeably cooler cabin, less glare, and a dashboard and seats that are not being baked every afternoon — at a legal shade on the front windows. It does not interfere with phone signal, GPS, or keyless entry the way older metallic films could. It is the option we recommend for anyone who parks outside, which in this city is most people.
Standard film
Standard dyed film handles privacy and glare and costs less. It does far less for heat, and it is the film that eventually turns purple and starts bubbling on older cars. If the goal is appearance rather than comfort, it does the job.
We fit both and will tell you honestly which one is worth it for how you actually use the car. If it lives in a garage and you want privacy, standard film is fine. If it sits on the street in July, ceramic is the one that pays you back.
What Tint Actually Does in a Chicago Summer
- Keeps the cabin cooler. A car parked on an open street in July gets brutally hot. Heat-rejecting film is the difference between uncomfortable and unusable.
- Stops your interior fading. UV is what cracks dashboards and fades upholstery and leather. Tint is the simplest protection your interior will ever get.
- Cuts glare, on low winter sun off the lake and on wet roads at night.
- Adds privacy for whatever is on the back seat.
- Holds glass together if a window is ever broken, because the film keeps the fragments in place.
Tinting Options
Full Vehicle Tint
Every side window plus the rear glass, in ceramic or standard film. The usual choice.
Front Windows Only
Matching the front windows to factory-tinted rear glass, which is what most cars actually need.
Rear Tint and Sun Strip
Rear glass plus a windshield sun strip, for glare and rear-seat privacy without touching the front windows.
Tint is quoted by vehicle, because glass area and how tricky the rear window is to fit vary a lot between cars. Book a quote and we will give you a real number for your car before anything is ordered.
Illinois Tint Rules, in Plain English
We apply film that keeps you compliant, and we will walk you through what is allowed before anything goes on the glass. In general terms: front windows are usually kept lighter, rear windows can go darker, and the windshield is limited to a strip across the top. Rules differ by vehicle type and change from time to time, so if you are unsure, ask us when you book and we will go through it with you.
This is general information, not legal advice.
Bubbling, Peeling, or Purple? We Take It Off First
Old film fails in a predictable way: it goes purple, it bubbles, and it starts lifting at the edges. Once it does, there is no saving it — it has to come off before new film goes on, and that is a slow job done properly, because the adhesive and the rear defroster lines both need care.
We remove old tint as part of a retint, and we would rather do that than lay new film over a failing layer.
Install Time and Aftercare
- Most installs take one to two hours, depending on the vehicle and how many windows.
- Leave the windows up for 48 to 72 hours while the film cures. This is the one thing that genuinely matters.
- A little haze or a few small water pockets are normal at first and clear as it dries out.
- Wait about a week before cleaning the inside of the glass, and use something ammonia-free after that.
Tint Protects the Inside. Coating Protects the Outside.
Tint stops the sun wrecking your interior. Ceramic coating does the same job for the paint, against road salt, street parking, and the same UV. Most people booking tint are trying to keep a car nice for the long run, and these are the two services that actually do that.

Most jobs take one to two hours, depending on the vehicle and how many windows are being done.
Usually 48 to 72 hours. We will give you the aftercare instructions when you collect the car.
If the car parks outside, yes. Ceramic blocks far more heat at the same legal shade, so the cabin is genuinely cooler rather than just darker.
Ceramic film does not. Older metallic films could, which is where that reputation comes from.
Yes. Bubbling, peeling, and purple film all come off as part of a retint, including cleaning up the adhesive.
Our films carry manufacturer warranties against peeling, bubbling, and fading.
It depends on the window and the vehicle. Front windows are kept lighter, rear windows can go darker, and the windshield is limited to a top strip. Ask us when you book and we will go through the specifics for your car.
